Manufacturing Modernisation Fund

The Manufacturing Modernisation Fund is part of the broader Government intent to support the modernisation of the manufacturing sector to incorporate advanced technologies to increase innovation and competitiveness. To assist applicants in completing Merit Criterion 1 of the application, the Advanced Manufacturing Growth Centre (AMGC) has published a Sector Competitiveness Plan which outlines the following strategic priorities for the sector:

Advanced Knowledge

Does the project enable firms to become innovation leaders via:

  • High R&D investment spending commitment
  • Information and communication technology (ICT) intensity
  • A high Patent portfolio size
  • More collaboration with research institutions
  • More collaboration with other manufacturers
  • Employing more staff with science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) skills
  • A policy of upskilling existing staff on advanced technologies

Advanced Processes

Does the project enable firms to become process winners via:

  • Using state-of-the-art technology e.g. robotics; advanced materials and composites; digital design and rapid prototyping; additive manufacturing; nano, micro and precision manufacturing; augmented or virtual reality systems
  • Use of design led thinking and design for manufacture techniques
  • Managing energy and water efficiency
  • Becoming familiar with digitalisation e.g. implementing Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems
  • Embracing Industry 4.0 data collation and analysis techniques

Advanced Business Model

Does the project enable firms to become niche market players or service champions via:

  • High value niche solutions with compelling value propositions
  • A new product development strategy
  • Servitisation models which increase the share of services in total revenues
  • Increasing export competitiveness
  • Improving competitiveness against imports e.g. Reshoring manufacturing back to Australia
  • Linkages with other firms
  • Higher marketing research expenditure
  • More extensive supply chain links
  • Larger geographical reach
